Winter Safety Tips for Seniors

For many, winter is a season to kick back, relax and enjoy the beautiful snow. It’s also a time to be careful, as the cold temperatures and elements could definitely pose a danger to anyone that’s unprepared. If you are looking forward to spending a bit of time with old man winter, here are some cold weather safety tips for seniors.

Keep Your Skin Covered

One simple way to protect yourself from the elements in winter is to keep your skin covered. Wear hats, scarves, and gloves, and moisturize your skin. If you plan to be out in the elements for long periods of time, try using a heavier based moisturizer like Vaseline to protect your skin from high winds.  We encourage our clients receiving senior care in Richmond VA to dress appropriately for the weather and to have as much fun as possible.

Stay Away from Ice and Snow Banks

Snow banks are dangerous because they’re slippery, and you can never really tell how deep the snow is. When you’re pulling up to a parking area, or if you’re walking in your neighborhood, it’s important to stay away from these and not to walk through them. If you can’t get around it, then it’s best to just turn around and go the other way.

Wear Appropriate Winter Boots

Wearing the right type of winter boots can mean the difference between avoiding a slip and fall, or hurting yourself and ending up in the emergency room. Your winter boots should have plenty of grip on the bottom, and should have a very small heel, if any.  This is particularly important if you plan to shovel snow, or if you’re just going to walk few blocks.

Get Your Furnace and Generator Serviced

Be sure to have your furnace and generator serviced well before the winter months in order to avoid heat loss when it gets really cold. You don’t want to have issues with your furnace during the middle of the season, and it’s always good to keep your generator in tip top shape in case of a power outage. Americool Heating and Cooling Inc. is a great place to call for help in this area.
