How Non Medical Senior Care Prevents Outdoor Falls In Katy Communities
At ABC SW Houston (Katy), we’re all about empowering seniors, encouraging their independence and giving them the freedom to get out and about in their communities, rather than being confined to the home.
And yet, while there are plenty of benefits to getting active outdoors and exploring the community–lower risk of social isolation, depression, and malnutrition, to name a few–without the right support, this lifestyle can actually increase your loved one’s fall risk.
According to the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 35-40% of community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older fall each year, and at least 50% of these falls occur outdoors!
Don’t worry: there are ways to give your loved one all the benefits of the great outdoors, without any of the risks. Step one is to understand outdoor fall risk.
Understanding Outdoor Fall Risk In Katy, Texas Communities
A 2010 report by the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society sought to understand the differences between indoor and outdoor falls. Initially, researchers collected data on 765 participants aged 70 or older via questionnaires and comprehensive clinical examinations. Participants were instructed to record falls on daily calendars for the duration of the study. Regular telephone follow-ups were scheduled to discuss the location and circumstances of each fall.
At the end of the 21.7-month study, 598 indoor and 524 outdoor falls were reported. Researchers analyzed the data in order to identify some common risk factors for each. And the results were quite surprising.
Shockingly, one of the main risk factors for outdoor falls was “being relatively physically active and healthy” (Kelsey et al., 2010, p. 2135). Healthy and active seniors get out and get active more often, which ups their fall risk. Researchers concluded that too many fall prevention plans focused solely on indoor falls suffered by seniors with poor mobility and low activity levels. More non medical senior care programs focusing on the prevention of outdoor falls are needed–programs like ours!
