Senior Care Tips: How To Spot The Signs Of Elder Abuse In El Paso, TX

According to studies, approximately 5-million Americans face elder abuse every year; however, only about 1 in 24 cases are being reported (Perry, 2022).

In order to protect our seniors and bring abusers to justice, caregivers need to know how to spot the signs of abuse. According to Grace Ortiz, Community Engagement Specialist for Adult Protective Services, these include:

  1. Signs of neglect—This broad term can refer to almost any unmet needs. For example, if your loved ones appear to be dirty and unkempt or losing weight, or they lack air conditioning to get them through El Paso’s hot summers, you may be witnessing signs of neglect.
  2. Signs of physical abuse—Look for any bruising, burns, cuts, and evidence of intimidation or isolation. Don’t be afraid to ask your loved ones how they got that bruise or cut, and make sure their story matches the injury.
  3. Signs of financial abuse—Be wary of any unusual spending, forged checks, attempts by family to change names on a will/deed or access bank accounts without approval, and overcharging on bills.
  4. Signs of mental/emotional abuse—Emotional abuse may refer to verbal abuse, threatening, yelling, or repeatedly ignoring seniors. If you witness any such treatment, or your loved ones seem intimidated around certain people, they may be experiencing mental or emotional abuse. Keeping seniors from friends and family is another sign of emotional abuse.

Naturally, the best way to spot these signs is to get involved with your loved one’s daily caretaking and establish ‘baselines” for their behavior. This takes time and trust, but it will allow you to identify symptoms of abuse without having to catch anyone “in the act.”

Of course, many family caregivers are already spread too thin between career, child care, and senior care obligations, but that’s where our senior care team can make all the difference. Whether you want to free up more time to monitor your loved one, or you’d rather entrust their care entirely to a member of our senior care team, we are up to the task. Since we’re already responsible for their daily care, we are perfectly positioned to spot the signs of abuse, and we will report any suspicions directly to you.

In addition, our senior care teams can:

  • Chaperone your loved ones during outings and visits with friends and family
  • Ensure proper hydration, nutrition, exercise, and social wellness
  • Simplify reporting when elder abuse continues or escalates
  • Keep your loved ones company during hospital stays to discourage abuse/neglect in primary care settings
  • Monitor phone calls, email correspondence, and visits to reduce opportunities for abuse/exploitation/manipulation and keep predatory scammers away
  • Ensure your loved ones are not overcharged when out running errands or buying goods/services, and more!

We’ve helped hundreds of El Paso families protect their loved ones, and we can do the same for you!
