Strategies for Boosting Brain Health

As we grow older, forgetfulness is something that we all accept.  Maybe our keys are misplaced more frequently, or we might forget the names of people who we know but don’t see on a daily basis.

Usually, this is nothing to worry about and is simply part of the aging process, but if it is something that gradually starts to get worse, or if the frequency of the incidents increases, then it may be a symptom of something a little more serious.

We are bombarded every day with messages about how important it is to keep our bodies healthy, but what about our brains?  Not keeping our brains healthy can lead to all sorts of troublesome cognitive impairments.  Here are a few ideas for how to keep that brain in tiptop condition:

Stay Active

“Healthy body healthy mind” is an old saying, but it is absolutely true.  Your arms and legs don’t work by themselves; your brain tells them to work.  Keeping them moving keeps your brain working.  Healthy bodies also mean less likelihood of heart problems or stroke, both of which have a massive toll on brain health.

Socialize and Chat

If you have home care in Rock Hill, then frequent chats with your Caregiver will be a part of everyday life.  It is also important to leave the confines of your home, if you can, and chat with family and friends as often as possible.  Vary the subjects: talk about the past, what’s happening now, and any plans you have for the future.  Jumping back and forth in time keeps the brain on its toes.

Play Games

Get yourself a book of puzzles and do them whenever you have any down time.  Keep your brain working for the entire time you’re awake, if you can. Crosswords, word searching, Sudoku, and other puzzles are all great ways to keep your brain active.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Getting enough sleep is beneficial to your health.  Your body cannot function without sleep, which means that your brain is going to suffer, too.

Eat healthy

What you put into your body fuels it, along with your brain.  Feed it healthy things such as fruit, vegetables, and lean proteins.  Avoiding processed food can clear the brain as well as the heart.
