Dealing with Loss of Appetite in an Aging Parent

- Drinking plenty of water: You may not know this, but the amount of water that your senior is drinking on a daily basis has a big impact on their appetite. Make sure your senior is getting their 8-10 glasses of water every day to keep a healthy appetite.
- Replace the processed foods: If your senior is eating a diet of mainly processed foods, this could be a big factor leading to their loss of appetite. Processed foods have almost no nutritional value and don’t make meals that your senior is excited to eat. Make sure to replace the processed foods with nutrient-dense foods like fruits, veggies, and lean meat in your senior’s diet.
- Keep the unhealthy snacks away: It’s a good idea to work with your senior to go through their cabinets and pantry to see what kinds of unhealthy snacks are hanging around. When your loved one is supposed to be eating a healthy meal, they may be snacking on these unhealthy snacks. Make sure to replace these out in favor of fruits, veggies, healthy granola bars, and water.
