On June 10th, 2015, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Midlands Region, hosted a kick-off party for Returning Walk Team Captains to get people focused on the upcoming walk later on October 24th, 2015 at 9 am at Finlay Park in downtown Columbia. The party was held at Hickory Tavern located in the Vista section of Columbia. This event was the first summer event leading up to the October Walk and all previous team captains were invited to enjoy, beer, wine and cocktails, as well as, wings, nachos, chicken fingers and fries. Committee members for the 2015 Walk were also present, including the chairman of the 2015 Walk, Nate Rhodes as well as the head of the Team Retention Committee, Chris Pepper.

Though Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in America, not quite as high as heart disease or cancer which are the top two causes of death here in the States, it has a much smaller research budget than other leading causes of death. Part of this is an image problem, the general public isn’t aware that Alzheimer’s is a cause of death, people feel that Alzheimer’s is a memory problem and that while the disease is horrible, something else will actually be the cause of death. Thus the goal of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s events throughout the country, is to raise money for researching the disease. One of the most unsettling facts about Alzheimer’s is that by the time you begin showing symptoms of the disease, it has already begun damaging your brain cells.

Because of the damage being done before one is even aware that they are suffering from Alzheimer’s, research is desperately needed to combat the progression of the disease and seek out new drug therapies to either treat, prevent or cure those afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Always Best Care is committed to helping raise money to fight this disease. If you would like to join our team in the fight, call our office at (803) 403-1895 and ask for Tyler. You can start your own team by visiting the website at www.alz.org/sc. We look forward to seeing you at the walk. #Walk2EndAlz #Walk2EndAlzCola #EndAlz
