Simple Changes to Help Reduce Springtime Allergies
As the weather warms up, allergen levels rise. Everything from tree pollen to weeds to mold can make eyes start itching and noses start running. Plus, there is the coughing, sneezing, and sinus congestion. Allergy season can be miserable without the right strategies in place. Start preparing now to help keep symptoms at bay.
Replace Your Air Filter
Use an air filter in your HVAC system such as a HEPA filter that is designed to reduce common allergens and remove dust particles from the air. You may want to consider an air purifier as well. These devices can help limit the effects of any pollen or mold that you may have brought inside with you, or that are pulled in from the outdoor air.
Stay on Top of Cleaning
As more allergens begin popping up, you may want to ramp up your cleaning efforts. Dust and vacuum more often, especially if you or others have been going in and out a lot. Wipe down surfaces that you touch frequently to keep pollen from spreading.
Track Pollen Counts
Pay attention to the weather and check the pollen levels each day. If pollen counts are high for substances that drive your allergies crazy, try to stay indoors as much as possible. Although it’s tempting to open your windows, that can invite more pollen and mold particles inside, so you may be better off leaving the AC on or using a fan. If you do have to go outside, make sure you cover up. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can help.
Change Clothes When Coming Inside
After spending time outdoors, immediately remove your shoes, hat, and jacket when coming inside and wash your hands. It can be a good idea to change your entire outfit and throw everything into the wash if pollen levels were high. Showering at night can also help to wash away any allergens from your hair and body so you don’t track them into bed.
Ask About Medications
Seniors should take precautions when it comes to certain allergy medications that can actually make them feel worse. Talk to your doctor about any over-the-counter or prescription drugs that may help safely combat symptoms, or other steps you can take to manage allergies.
Being proactive and minimizing your exposure to common springtime allergens can keep you feeling your best. Start making small changes in your routines now so that as pollen counts continue to rise, you’re already prepared and keeping your home (and self) as allergy-free as possible.
