Summer Fun Close to Home

Heat WaveSummer is here and that means more opportunities to go places, do things and enjoy the outdoors. If you have a patio or balcony where you live, be sure to enjoy fresh air daily, weather permitting. If you’re comfortable venturing further from home with a family member or your caregiver, here are some fun things to do in the suburbs. Whatever activities you choose, the important thing is to feel relaxed and refreshed.

Ride through the Chicago Botanic Garden
The Chicago Botanic Garden offers narrated tram tours of the grounds so you can take in the stunning landscape without taking a step. Check in at the Admissions desk to reserve your spot, free with admission to the Garden. July 12 and July 14 are free days for Cook County residents.

Visit your local library
We’re fortunate that suburban libraries in our area offer a broad assortment of activities, services, and resources tailored to the interests of older adults. At the Glenview Library, for example, seniors can enjoy education and information programs, free movies, book talks, and other types of programming. For seniors living with dementia, there are travel memory kits that can be checked out for 21 days. A caregiver and client can interact with a variety of multimedia resources in the kits to virtually explore another country.

Have a picnic in the park
Pack a lunch and choose a picnic table under a shady tree in your favorite local park. The lush greenery and the sounds of chirping birds make for a refreshing change of scenery and eating outdoors seems to make food taste better.
