Helping Seniors Enjoy Traditions

Family traditions are something that is important to many people, including the seniors in your life. In order to make sure that your loved one can enjoy your family traditions long into their golden years, there are a few simple accommodations you can make.

Cook Together – If your loved one used to do all of the cooking for large family gatherings, whether for holidays, birthdays or just because, but doesn’t enjoy it or can’t stand for long periods of time anymore, everyone can cook together. Make it a group effort, involving all generations. This makes the tradition even more fun because everyone plays a role in the preparation of the meal. During the days leading up to the event, you can have a provider from the home care agency do the grocery shopping and house preparations for your loved one.

Help with Activities – If writing cards, shopping for gifts or making lists has become difficult due to arthritis, poor eyesight or any other reason, your loved one’s care provider can assist with these activities. This enables your loved one to participate in the same activities without any stress.

Host Earlier – If you typically get together for dinner, but your loved one is tired during the evening hours, make it a plan to have brunch rather than dinner. This still allows the family to get together and continue tradition, just in a slightly different way.
