Staying Connected While Apart During the COVID-19 Pandemic
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many older adults have found themselves self-isolating and feeling lonely than ever before. Seniors, especially those with underlying health conditions are at a greater risk when it comes to this fatal disease, therefore practicing social distancing & staying home are important for their safety. However, with little contact with others, they can quickly find themselves feeling depressed. So, here are a few ways that can help them combat loneliness and keep a positive attitude during this difficult time.
Use video calling platforms: There are many video calling platforms that you can use to stay connected with your friends and family. Some popular platforms that allow users to both see and talk to others are – Zoom, Skype, Google Duo, FaceTime, and WhatsApp.
Limit time watching the news: Watch the news for no more than once or twice a day. It is good stay up-to-date with what’s happening in the world, but spending hours watching every piece of news can make you feel more fearful and isolated.
Keep yourself busy: One of the best ways to overcome feelings of loneliness is to keep your mind active. You can keep yourself busy by solving puzzles, reading books, watching a movie, or catching up on some cleaning around the house. Focusing your energy on activities that you enjoy gives your mind less time to think over the negatives.
Have a routine: Stick to your normal routine as much as possible. Wake up on time, take shower, get dressed, prepare meals, go for a walk, check in with friends (via phone/text/email/video), do the daily crossword, etc. Keep doing things you usually would, just adjusting them a little to align with the current guidelines. This will help you see each day with a purpose while making you feel productive at the same time.
