4 Things You Don't Know About Senior Care Services

Senior care services are a growing industry. Everybody knows the large baby boomer generation are now becoming seniors and there is money to be made helping them adjust to this. With this increase in attention comes innovation and diversification; there are options available to seniors that never existed before. Conversely, there are also some people and companies looking to cash in and perhaps do not have the right frame of mind or expertise to help people. So you should be careful when choosing senior care services and arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible. Here are four things you may not know about senior care services.

There are a variety of options if living at home is not feasible anymore

Do you know the difference between a nursing home and a retirement community? Between an Assisted Living Community and an Independent Living Community or a Board & Care? You could be forgiven for thinking all these different terms are just “brand speak”, different ways for these facilities to market themselves. But that’s not exactly true.

When used correctly, all the above terms refer to slightly different level and type of care. For example, the senior care services provided in a retirement community are very limited. These communities have elderly friendly floor plans but are largely just places for elderly to live and look after their own lives, while the staff could look after some housekeeping and landscaping. An Independent Living Community however offers the above service as well as meals, social activities; some Independent Living Communities also offer caregiving services if and when needed, as an option at extra fee. Nursing homes, however, are medical facilities where patients can stay for rehab or more acute illness.  Nursing homes are what we would like to avoid by staying safe and healthy through our lives.

There are Assisted Living Communities

Assisted Living Communities can be the best option for someone who cannot stay at home due to social, financial or health and safety reasons.  Assisted Living Communities offer many senior care services and assistance for what is called ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) and more such as bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding, transportation, etc. These services are provided only based on assessment and on an as needed basis.  So the residents will have the option to remain independent for as long as they are capable of and use the caregiving services when needed, for short or long periods.

There are in-home senior care services

A whole host of senior care services can be administered in-home. Seniors need not necessarily move out of their homes to receive senior care services. In-home caregivers can provide assistance with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living)  in the client’s home.

There are different types of in-home senior care services

The care provided at home can range anywhere from a companion care which would include meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation, playing various games, grocery shopping to full care services which could consist of incontinence care, bathing, transfers, feeding, etc…  Make sure you hire the right person through a qualified and licensed company to address your in-home care needs.
